4 days/ 3 nights Rwanda Gorilla Tracking

This safari takes you to two gorilla parks – Parc National des Volcans (PNV) home to 340 of the 720 Mountain Gorillas that survive in world today. It is also the location where Dian Fossey studied Mountain Gorillas for 20 years. There are four groups of Mountain Gorillas located in the Rwandan sector of the Virunga Volcanoes. They are the Susa Group, Sabinyo Group, Group Thirteen, and Amahoro Group. Trekking times to reach each group vary from two to seven hours depending upon their movements. Most days there are several groups within two-hour treks of the car park. During the wet season trekking times are reduced to as little as 20 minutes as the gorillas move to lower elevations to feed.

Day 1: Saturday                    Rwanda/Parc National des Volcans (PNV)
Arrive Kigali and depart for PNV. The journey takes you through the beautiful terraced hillsides that characterize much of Rwanda’s landscape, gradually climbing to the base of the awesome Virunga volcanoes, sometimes with as many as five peaks visible. (L, D) Volcanoes Virunga Lodge

Note- depending on your flight arrival into Kigali, you may need to overnight in Kigali - extra cost

Day 2: Sunday                    Parc National des Volcans (PNV)
This morning track the gorillas in PNV through the light mountain forest on the slopes of the Virunga’s. If you are lucky you may spot the gorillas after a few hours walk, however some gorilla families are more elusive and tracking can take a full day, especially when it is wet and muddy. (B, L, D) Volcanoes Virunga Lodge

Day 3: Monday                   Parc National des Volcans (PNV)
After breakfast you have several options: participating in another gorilla trek to a different group of gorillas(the extra permit must purchased at time of initial booking),; trek to Karisoke, the site of Dian Fossey’s and Digit’s graves; or trek to see the Golden Monkeys. The trek to Karisoke is about a two-hour trek and can be difficult. Drive to Gisenyi, visit Ross Carr's orphanage and Lake Kivu or climb the Visoke/Muhavura volcanoes, or visit the local school and community projects or walk to Lake Bulera. Guides are provided and it is advisable to ask the hotel staff to prepare a light snack for the trek. (B, L, D) Volcanoes Virunga Lodge

Day 4: Tuesday                      Depart
After breakfast drive back to  Kigali.  Time permitting you may tour the city, a visit to the market, pottery project, handicraft shops, the Franco-Rwandan cultural centre and the genocide memorial.  Transfer to the airport for your onward flights for your safari extension.  (depending on your onward flight schedule you may requires to overnight in Kigali).(B, L).
